“Every secret of a writer’s soul, every experience of his life, every quality of his mind, is written large in his works.”

Virginia Woolf

Welcome Future Rhetors of ENG 2105!

(Unity/Topic Sentence) One of the most sought out skills that both professors and employers seek in their students and employees respectively is critical thinking. (Adequate Development/Body) Instead of following the crowd, everyone should have the ability to think for oneself by carefully analyzing a given situation. Through active participation in class discussions, Dr. Gill will test each student’s ability to enunciate an opinion with confidence and sound reasoning to support it. Additionally, the submission of two argumentative research papers in the E-portfolio at the end of the semester will serve as evidence that the student conducted research on both sides of an issue before formulating a personal judgement on the matter. (Coherence/Conclusion) In the end, each student will have the ability to utilize this acquired skill in future courses and in all aspects of a student’s life.

(Unity/Topic Sentence) As the second quality, equilibrium will dictate each student’s level of success in this course. (Adequate Development/Body) Dr. Gill understands that each student has other classes and responsibilities to attend to. Even though the curriculum includes additional reading assignments that may overwhelm the student, creating a schedule to set aside time slots for dedicating to ENG 2105 each week will help students to maintain a healthy balance. (Coherence/Conclusion) Just as an orthodontist slowly increases the thickness of the wire on a patient’s braces so that the pain is bearable, equilibrium saves the student from unnecessary stress.

(Unity/Topic Sentence) Lastly, fulfillment of the class mantra, “the best writing is rewriting” requires the application of patience with oneself. (Adequate Development/Body) Dr. Gill expects each student to produce a rough draft, a final draft, and an editing log for each writing assignment. This process includes visiting Writing Center tutors outside of class hours and several nights of burning the midnight oil to perfect each artifact. This means that the student will not hit the bullseye on the first time upon completion of the rough draft. As imperfect beings, the affinity for making mistakes and failing requires patience. (Coherence/Conclusion) As a result, patience will make each student a stronger communicator and critical thinker.

(Unity/Topic Sentence) Salutations! Priscilla Laguna, a student who has gone through the journey from an undeveloped to a developed rhetor, shakes warmly by the hand with all incoming developing rhetors. (Adequate Development/Body) Although this English course sounds and looks intimidating, Priscilla will provide each student with the necessary tools to pass the class with flying colors. Much like an orthodontist who, through a series of gradual adjustments in braces, straightens the teeth of a patient, Dr. Gillstraightens out the flaws of each student by teaching Aristotelian Argumentative Rhetoric in a step-by-step process. (Coherence/Conclusion) The three qualities that each student will achieve by the end of the semester include critical thinking, equilibrium, and patience.
